Desai inducted into International Academy of Medical and Biological Engineering

Tejal Desai, PhD, joined, in September, the 2019 class of fellows of the International Academy of Medical and Biological Engineering (IAMBE) for her in research in microparticle and nanoparticle engineering. IAMBE fellows are “recognized for their outstanding contributions to the profession of medical and biological engineering” through a vote of all academy fellows.

Desai is chair of the Department of Bioengineering and Therapeutic Sciences (BTS), a joint department of the UCSF Schools of Pharmacy and Medicine. She was also recently named the inaugural director of the UCSF Engineering and Applied Sciences Initiative known as Health Innovation Via Engineering (HIVE).

Among her many contributions to research, leadership, and education, Desai recently developed an implantable drug delivery device that spares glaucoma patients from daily medicated eye drops. Nanotechnology from her lab has spurred research into an artificial pancreas, which could provide insulin to diabetic patients without the need for injections.
