UCSF School of Pharmacy tops NIH funding

The UCSF School of Pharmacy was the largest recipient of 2004 research funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) among pharmacy schools in the United States. The School's 2004 total NIH award funding was US$23.5 million.

"The 2004 ranking marks the 25th consecutive year we've received top NIH funding," said Mary Anne Koda-Kimble, PharmD, dean, UCSF School of Pharmacy. The 1979 figure was US$1.7 million. This is quite an accomplishment."

NIH funding to the School currently supports research in chemical biology, complex systems, computational and structural biology, and pharmacogenomics. According to Ken Dill, PhD, the School's associate dean for research, "the numbers reflect excellence in our research enterprise—outstanding faculty, students, and staff; a history of outstanding leadership; a long-standing commitment to the most fundamental and basic research at the interface where biology and medicine meets the underpinning physical and chemical sciences; and all within the framework of a highly collaborative and supportive institution, UCSF. The School combines an especially congenial atmosphere with a strong vision for a pipeline from basic research to better medications and care."
