Kroon named Fellow of the American Pharmacists Association

Lisa Kroon, PharmD, chair of the UCSF School of Pharmacy’s Department of Clinical Pharmacy, has been named a Fellow of the American Pharmacists Association Academy of Pharmacy Practice and Management (APhA-APPM).

The selection honors APhA Academy members for exemplary professional achievements and service to the profession through activities with APhA and other organizations. Kroon will be officially recognized at the APhA Annual Meeting in Baltimore, MD, March 4–7, 2016.

Patient care and public policy

Kroon, who joined the School faculty in 1996, has played an integral role in the care of patients with diabetes, chronic illnesses, and tobacco dependence. She has been a leader in developing new models of pharmacy practice and education as well as in changing and implementing public policies affecting pharmacy practice.

Recently, Kroon chaired the California Pharmacists Association task force implementing the state’s 2014 pharmacist provider status law (SB 493), which expands pharmacists’ health care roles, especially in community settings, allowing them to furnish hormonal contraception, prescription nicotine replacement, vaccinations, and certain travel medications, and to order tests related to managing a patient’s medication regimen. She is now developing and delivering training programs to ensure pharmacists are prepared to offer new care services.

Kroon practices in the UCSF Medical Center’s Adult Diabetes Clinic and Diabetes Teaching Center. She is lead author of the diabetes chapter in Applied Therapeutics: The Clinical Use of Drugs, a leading, internationally used pharmacy textbook.

Multiple approaches to tobacco cessation

Kroon has been a leader in a variety of approaches to reducing the health burden of tobacco dependence. Her roles have included:

  • Codirector of the UCSF Fontana Tobacco Treatment Center, which offers both classes and individual consultations to treat tobacco dependence.
  • Teacher of smoking cessation methods to UCSF health professionals and students.
  • Codeveloper of Rx for Change, an evidence-based smoking cessation curriculum initially designed for pharmacy students, which has been used to train more than 100,000 health care clinicians and students nationally and worldwide.
  • Coleader of a study in collaboration with Safeway Inc., comparing different training and implementation approaches for the grocery chain’s pharmacy personnel to integrate brief smoking cessation interventions as a routine component of care. The study findings supported the ensuing adoption of an evidence-based smoking cessation program in more than a thousand Albertson’s/Safeway pharmacies nationwide.
  • Leader of the UCSF team that successfully advocated for a ban on the sale of tobacco in San Francisco pharmacies, presenting evidence-based testimony at City Hall for the law, which went into effect in 2008.
