Intern License Requirement

Students enrolled in the PharmD program are required to hold a valid intern permit from the California Board of Pharmacy in order to participate in pharmacy practice experiences. All students must file an intern pharmacist application upon entry to the PharmD program by the established deadline. Once obtained, intern pharmacist licenses are valid until graduation from the program. Information about the intern pharmacist license, eligibility requirements, and application materials are available from the California Board of Pharmacy (CBOP) and are also provided to entering students as part of Pre-Orientation. Per CBOP, students must have a valid U.S. Social Security Number (SSN) or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) to apply.

Students are expected to hold a valid intern pharmacist license no later than the start of the Winter quarter of their first year in order to be able to complete their Introductory Pharmacy Practice Education (IPPE), an essential educational component required for satisfactorily progressing through the program and graduating on time. If a student does not hold a valid intern pharmacist license by this date, they will be required to take a leave of absence until they are eligible to receive an intern pharmacist license, at which point they will be permitted to return to the program the following academic year. A student whose intern pharmacist license is denied or revoked will be reviewed by the Committee on Academic Standards who will determine the appropriate course of action, which may include dismissal from the PharmD program.
