DeGrado receives Protein Society’s Stein and Moore Award

William DeGrado, PhD, faculty member in the School’s Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry, has been named the 2015 recipient of The Protein Society’s Stein and Moore Award.

The award is given annually by the international society “to recognize eminent leaders in protein science who have made sustained high-impact research contributions to the field.”

His impact on the field of protein science can hardly be overestimated.

Innovation in Education Awards go to Shin, Jacobson, Ferrone

The inaugural presentation of the Dean’s Innovation in Education Awards took place during the School of Pharmacy faculty meeting at Mission Hall on the Mission Bay campus on January 6, 2015.

Honorees receiving the award’s engraved glass apple and $1,000 were Jaekyu Shin, PharmD, and Marcus Ferrone, PharmD, JD, faculty members in the Department of Clinical Pharmacy; and Matt Jacobson, PhD, faculty member in the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry.

Craik named a fellow of National Academy of Inventors

Charles S. Craik, PhD, whose innovative research has generated ten patents and helped launch two companies, has been named a fellow by the National Academy of Inventors (NAI).

Such fellow status is “accorded to academic inventors who have demonstrated a highly prolific spirit of innovation in creating or facilitating outstanding inventions that have made a tangible impact on quality of life, economic development, and the welfare of society,” notes the NAI.

Label warnings, antibiotic measurements, cancer therapies, and smoking interventions take top honors at annual seminar

Studies of improved over-the-counter acetaminophen warning labels, more accurate measurements of antibiotics in hospitalized patients, therapies for metastatic breast cancer, and methods for training pharmacy personnel to help smokers quit took top honors at the Department of Clinical Pharmacy’s 16th Annual Spring Research Seminar.

James Fraser named Searle Scholar, will shine new light on protein shapeshifting

Biophysicist James Fraser, PhD, has been named a 2014 Searle Scholar. His laboratory will be awarded $300,000 in funding over the next three years to support his research into more accurately and precisely describing the ways that protein molecules change shape to carry out the functions of life in our bodies.

UCSF School of Pharmacy leads in NIH funding for 34th year in a row

For the 34th consecutive year, the UCSF School of Pharmacy has received more research funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) than any other pharmacy school in the United States.

School researchers were awarded $29.2 million during the 2013 NIH fiscal year, from October 1, 2012 to September 30, 2013.

Physicist Adam Abate, PhD, who applies microfluidics technology to speedily process millions of encapsulated biological samples to discover drugs, engineer proteins, and diagnose cancers, has received a National Science Foundation (NSF) CAREER award.

Ryan Hernandez awarded Sloan Research Fellowship

Ryan Hernandez, PhD, whose lab studies patterns of genetic variation from populations around the world, using detailed computer modeling to learn more about human evolutionary processes and to discover regions of the genome vital to function and underlying disease, has been named a 2013 Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellow.

Leslie Benet wins Ebert Prize

During his illustrious half-century career, UCSF School of Pharmacy faculty member Leslie Benet, PhD, has authored more than 400 peer-reviewed publications, many helping to define the field of pharmacokinetics—how the body absorbs, distributes, metabolizes, and excretes medications—or as he once put it, “what the body does to the drug.”
