MacDougall Selected for Teaching Award

Conan MacDougall, PharmD, UCSF School of Pharmacy faculty member, will be honored April 8, 2009 with a 2008 - 2009 UCSF Academic Senate Distinction in Teaching Award. MacDougall will receive the Category 1 award, which is reserved for faculty members who have been at UCSF for five years or less. The awards ceremony will take place at 12 noon in Cole Hall on the UCSF Parnassus campus.

Bero's UCSF History of Mentorship Recognized with Luft and Academic Senate Awards

Lisa Bero, PhD, UCSF School of Pharmacy faculty member, is the recipient of two inaugural UCSF awards for outstanding mentorship. She is the first recipient of the Harold S. Luft Award for Mentoring in Health Services and Health Policy Research and the 2008-2009 UCSF Academic Senate Distinction in Mentoring Award, Category 2 for faculty members at the rank of full professor.

Giacomini and Peck Honored with ASCPT Awards

Kathy Giacomini, PhD, and Carl Peck, MD, faculty members in the UCSF Department of Bioengineering and Therapeutic Sciences (BTS), received awards from the American Society for Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics (ASCPT) at the society's annual meeting held in National Harbor, Maryland, USA, March 18-21, 2009.

Winter Named UCSF Pharmacy Alumnus of the Year

Michael E. Winter, PharmD, emeritus professor of clinical pharmacy, UCSF School of Pharmacy, has been selected as the 2009 recipient of the UCSF Pharmacy Alumni Association's Distinguished Alumnus of the Year award. In announcing the award, UCSF Alumni Association President Cooky Quandt, PharmD, noted that "Dr. Winter was an extraordinary candidate and received a unanimous vote of the Board of Governors."

Elmore and Clemens Win 2008 Clinical Skills Competition

Lindsey Elmore and Evan Clemens, student pharmacists from the UCSF School of Pharmacy, are national winners of the 2008 American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) Clinical Skills Competition.

Kroetz Elected Fellow of American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists

Deanna Kroetz, PhD, UCSF School of Pharmacy faculty member, has been elected as a fellow of the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists (AAPS). Her election was announced during the November 2008 annual AAPS meeting in Atlanta, Georgia.

Benet Receives Magic Bullet Lifetime Achievement Award

Leslie Z. Benet, PhD, UCSF School of Pharmacy faculty member, received the 2008 Paul Ehrlich Magic Bullet Lifetime Achievement Award at the Second World Conference on Magic Bullets, which convened in Nuremberg, Germany, in early October. The award recognized Benet's scientific accomplishments in pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics. Benet was one of 7 recipients.

Phillips Awarded US$5 Million NCI Grant to Study Personalized Medicine

The wider world use of medical tests and treatments based on individual genetic differences is the focus of a new, US$5 million research program funded by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and led by UCSF School of Pharmacy health economist Kathryn Phillips, PhD. The grant was awarded on September 16, 2008 and will be paid over three years.

Bero Listed Among 100 Unbiased Advisors

An international list of 100 independent medical experts to whom journalists can turn for unbiased advice on how to interpret research studies and data was published online by the British Journal of Medicine on July 23, 2008. Named on this list is UCSF School of Pharmacy faculty member Lisa Bero, PhD, an expert on the influence of corporate funding on academic research and on the unbiased evaluation of research studies.

Dill Elected to National Academy of Sciences

Ken Dill, PhD, professor and associate dean of research in the UCSF School of Pharmacy and international expert on theoretical approaches to determining how protein molecules fold, has been elected to the National Academy of Sciences (NAS). With this announcement, made by the Academy on Tuesday, April 29, 2008, Dill becomes the second NAS member of the School.
